How Long Does Botox Last?
The short answer
Three to four months for most people, with a real range either side of that. Some get six weeks. Some get six months. Both are normal, and the average is a poor predictor of you.
The more useful question is what puts you at one end of that range rather than the other, because several of the factors are things you can actually see in advance.
Why it wears off at all
The drug blocks the signal between nerve and muscle. It doesn't damage anything permanently; it interrupts a connection.
Your body's response is to grow new connections. Over weeks, nerve endings sprout new terminals that bypass the blocked ones, and the muscle gradually starts receiving signals again. That regrowth is why the effect fades, why it fades gradually rather than stopping one morning, and why nothing about the product changes the basic timeline.
The rate at which you regrow those connections is largely yours and not adjustable.
What shortens it
A strong muscle. More muscle takes more product to hold down, and a standard dose on a strong muscle is effectively an under-dose. This is the most common reason for a short run.
A low dose. Sometimes deliberate, for a softer result. Sometimes a practice being conservative, sometimes a practice being economical. Either way, less product means an earlier return.
Being male, generally, for the muscle mass reason above.
High metabolism and heavy exercise. Frequently reported by practitioners and reasonably well accepted, if not precisely quantified. Endurance athletes often report shorter durations.
Treating certain areas. The muscles around the mouth and the platysma in the neck are constantly in use and tend to recover sooner than the forehead does.
Long gaps that let it fully return. Starting from a completely recovered muscle each time is different from treating one that never fully came back.
What lengthens it
Consistent treatment over years. Many people find their duration extends as a treated muscle gradually weakens with disuse. It's one of the few genuine arguments for regularity.
An adequate dose, which is the same point as above from the other direction.
Areas with less constant movement.
Being a bit older, in some reports, where muscle strength has already declined somewhat.
The things people believe that don't hold up
Zinc supplements. Popular online, thin evidence.
Avoiding heat or exercise long-term. The first-day advice is sensible; the idea that a hot yoga habit meaningfully shortens a three-month course is not well supported.
Brand. Botox and Dysport run broadly similar courses, and individual variation is far larger than the gap between them.
"Resistance" as an everyday explanation. True antibody-mediated resistance exists but is uncommon, and a great deal of what gets called resistance is under-dosing.
How to find your own number
Keep a note. Date, brand, total units, areas, and the date you first notice movement returning. Two or three rounds of that and you'll know your own duration better than any general article can tell you, and you'll be able to plan rather than guess.
The other benefit is that it protects you from a common trap: booking by the calendar rather than by your face. If your run is four months and you're being booked at three, you're paying for a month you didn't need. If your run is ten weeks and you're being booked at four months, you're spending a third of each cycle wishing you'd gone sooner.
Timing the next one
Most practitioners suggest returning as movement starts to come back rather than waiting for the lines to fully re-establish. Treating from a partially maintained baseline tends to give a smoother ongoing result.
Don't go earlier than about three months without a specific reason. More often than not, returning too soon is either unnecessary or a sign the last dose was too small, and the second explanation is the one worth discussing.
Plan around what your year looks like. If there's something you care about, count backwards: the treatment needs two weeks to take full effect, so the appointment sits at least a fortnight before, not the week of.
A few local notes
Practices around here are mostly small independent businesses and plenty are established members of groups like North Jersey Chamber of Commerce – How to Grow Your Business – Networking Events – North Jersey, which tells you about longevity rather than skill. Continuity with one injector is worth more than either, because the record of what worked is the thing that makes your duration predictable.
If your year runs to a schedule — a league, a class, a season on the township's activity list at Recreation | WEEHAWKEN TOWNSHIP — build the treatment cycle around it rather than the other way round.
And for anything you're planning outdoors after a treatment, checking National Weather Service matters less for the drug than for your comfort in the hours afterwards, when you've been told to stay upright and leave your face alone.
The answer, plainly
Three to four months is the honest general figure. Your own number is knowable and worth knowing. And if yours is much shorter than that, the first thing to examine is the dose, not the product.
