7 questions answered

Nearly every Botox question that reaches me is a request for a number. How many units. How many days until it kicks in. How many months before I'm back. How young is too young. People rarely phrase it that way, but that's what they want, and it's a sensible thing to want before you let someone inject a nerve blocker into your forehead.

So I've sorted this section by the number each page chases. Some of those numbers are fairly firm. Others come with a wide range and a list of reasons you might sit at one end of it. I'd rather show you the range than hand you a neat figure that falls apart the moment your own face gets involved.

A quick word on the drug. Botox is a brand name for one neuromodulator, a purified protein that stops a nerve from telling a muscle to contract. Less movement, softer lines on top of it. Nothing gets filled and nothing gets resurfaced. When a line is still there with your face completely at rest, a neuromodulator may soften it only partly, and that's a conversation to have before you pay.

The dose

How Many Units of Botox Do I Need for My Forehead? is the page to read if you're holding a quote and can't tell whether it's fair. Units are the currency, and the forehead is where people most often get too many or too few. The page separates the horizontal lines from the frown lines between your brows, which are a different muscle with a different dose, and explains why where the units go matters more than the total.

The days

How Long Does Botox Take to Work? covers the gap between the appointment and the result. The first signs usually show around day three and the full effect around two weeks, and judging it in between is how people end up paying for touch-ups they didn't need. If you're booking around a date, this is the page that tells you how far back to count.

The months

How Long Does Botox Last? gives the usual range and, more usefully, the things that push you toward the short or long end of it. It also makes the case for keeping your own record, because after two or three rounds your notes will beat any average I can quote.

The hours afterwards

What Should I Avoid After Botox? is the aftercare list with the reasoning attached. The first four hours matter most, the rest of the day calls for mild caution, and a surprising number of the rules people repeat actually belong to filler. Knowing which is which makes the list easier to follow.

The age question

Is Preventative Botox Worth It in My Twenties? takes on the idea of starting early to stop lines from forming at all. There's a real argument for it in some faces and a weak one in others, and it's a long commitment either way. The page lays out how to tell which camp you're in.

Two questions that aren't numbers

What Is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport? compares two neuromodulators that are more alike than their marketing suggests. The differences are real but modest, and your injector's familiarity with one of them counts for more than the label.

Can Botox Make My Eyebrows Droop? deals with the side effect people fear most. Yes, a heavy brow can happen, it's usually a matter of dose and placement, and it wears off. The page explains how to lower the odds before the needle comes out, which is the only time you can.

How I'd use this section

If you've never had a neuromodulator, read the dose page and the droop page together. Between them you'll know what to ask and what a careful answer sounds like.

If you're a regular and your results have started fading sooner, go to the months page and look hard at the part about dosing. A short run is more often an under-dose than a problem with the product.

If you're booking around something fixed, like a wedding, a work trip or a season of weekend games, the days page is the one that matters. Leave at least two weeks between the appointment and the day you care about.

Finding out who's around

Neuromodulators are offered by a lot of small practices in this part of the county, and a listing doesn't tell you much about skill. The county business group at Home - Hudson County Chamber of Commerce and the township's own site at WEEHAWKEN TOWNSHIP | Home will at least show you who's established locally and where. The statewide chamber at Home and the regional one at North Jersey Chamber of Commerce – How to Grow Your Business – Networking Events – North Jersey cover a wider net of member businesses.

None of that replaces sitting in a chair while someone watches your forehead move. Ask for the unit count out loud, write it down, and bring it to your next visit.
